From the President

Lyle Jones

The officers of the Stargazers' had a productive planning meeting on July 16, 2005. David Wells, Joe and Leroy Cain were also in attendance.
How many times on Sunday have we gone home from one of our star parties with clear skies after a few days of clouds or rain?  We decided to change the star party's time frame from Wednesday - Sunday to Friday - Tuesday starting with spring's (2006) Star Gaze.  Hopefully, if the clear sky tend continues for Sundays, we will have a few more clear nights to observe at our star parties.    People will still take the same amount of time off  from work and those who need to work on Monday can leave on Sunday and still  have a couple of nights to observe.
We need someone as an Outreach Coordinator to schedule and organize the Club's out reach events for the next year (2005-2006).
We need one or two individuals to access our Club's library and make recommendations about it's use, location, how to make it more available, or perhaps do we even need it.  If the library continues, we will need someone to serve as Librarian.
Leroy Cain is considering helping us inventory our Club's equipment!  Is anyone else willing to assist him? Once that is done, we then can list the equipment on the website and make it more available to our club members.
The Club needs some finance guidance.  The Stargazers was setup primarily as an observing club and wanted to just break even with our events. But we prospered and now need to look at moving some of the money into longer term investments that will help

Observing Notes

Ron Robisch

7/2/05
Carr's Mill (Lisbon, MD) - Approx. 8-10 attendees from Howard Astronomical League were present Conditions - fairly cool and low humidity for July. 65-70 deg F. Dewy. Clear. Transparency good. Seeing fair. Equip: 8" Meade SCT; 4 1/2" Orion Starblast (notes refer to obs with 8" unless otherwise stated)
Jupiter - Very nice at 80x. No GRS visible. Ganymede & Europa tightly grouped on west side of Jupiter; Io and Callisto on the east side. Image waviness was significant at about 160x do to mushy seeing.
Comet Tempel 1 (prior to Deep Impact) - Well, this didn't work out too well. I used a plot from Skymap Pro to try to find the comet, but I don't think I had the positional fidelity necessary to find the comet. Had the path fine, but the time increments along the path were spaced such that getting the precise spot for my time was tricky. I slewed up and back along the path, but did not discern the comet. : (I should have plotted out the ephemerides!
M51 (Whirlpool Galaxy) and NGC 5195, galaxies in CVn - Both easy and pretty bright. No spiral structure detected in M51, but its size was notably larger than just the bright center. Made a quick and dirty sketch in order to see if I could detect the new supernova (SN2005CS) in M51. I plotted a star which turned out to be slightly further out from M51's center than the supernova, but I can't say that I saw anything for certain at the SN's location. (Checked it on this image: http://mysite.wanadoomembers.co.uk/astroplover/Artemis285med/SN2005CS.jpg )
Switching to the 4 1/2" for a bit and doing some stream of consciousness starhopping off of Lambda Sagittarii:
M22 gc, Sgr - Very bright and large even in the small scope.  Great object!  NGC 6638 gc Sgr - very small, faint.
NGC 6644 pn Sgr - not detected, but I didn't really dwell on it either.  M28 gc Sgr - Easy, pretty small, bright. Nearly as blatantly obvious as M22. NGC 6544 gc Sgr - faint and small.  M8 Lagoon Nebula - Sgr - pretty bright and easy. Very pretty!  NGC 6530 oc Sgr - This is the open cluster within the Lagoon.  Nice, fairly rich group. Maybe a dozen or so stars within the nebulosity.  M20 Trifid Nebula - Sgr - Also easy, but M8's nicer. Cool to have both Lagoon and Trifid in the same Starblast field of view!  M11, Wild Duck Cluster, oc Scu - Suggested by a guest at the scope.  Well-defined V formation for them tiny ducks!  Finished off the night with M13, gc Her, in the 8". Drop dead gorgeous!!! Nice way to end the night!

Rick Barnes and Dave Wells have volunteered to assist with the legislation on light pollution and become an advocate for reducing light pollution within the State. They will work with Delaware Astronomical Society on this matter.  In addition, Dr. Robert A. Gorkin (a non-club member who has been a member of Dark Skies Society for years) is also willing to work with the Stargazers on future light pollution legislation.

If you are interested in helping, please contact me by email (worm1647@comcast.net) or by phone (302-736-9842).  Make the Delmarva Stargazers better with your involvement.

Perseid Meteor Shower Watch

Don Surles
Delmarva Star Gazers will host a Perseid Meteor Shower watch the night of August 11/12, 2005, at the Pickering Creek Audubon Center. The Center is on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Directions are below.

The evening will begin at 7:00 PM with a cookout followed by an overview of amateur astronomy activities at 8:00 PM and a get acquainted tour of the night sky beginning at 9:00PM. There will be a few scopes set up for viewing the wonders of the Summer Milky Way. The meteors should begin before midnight and continue until daybreak. The Center will provide hot drinks and snacks, I am sure there will be some hotdogs before dawn!
We are planning for this to be an all-night event. There will be facilities for catching a nap if necessary. Please bring a sleeping bag and extra layers of clothes since the night-time air can become cool and uncomfortable after midnight. A comfortable lawn/lounge chair aids in the meteor watching. I like to use a small tarp folded in half to provide a barrier from below and above, a pillow also helps.

I plan to get a nap before beginning the trip home. Breakfast at a local Fast Food Facility is a possibility.
This site is very dark and close to the water, so there is a possibility of some stray mosquitoes. You should consider a can of OFF, Cutters, DEET, Skin-So-Soft, or your favorite insect repellent/food.
Please call 410 822 4903 (ask for Lisetta) for additional information. Please put August 11 & 12 on your calendar, this should be a great night outside! Bring your cameras, scopes, binos, etc, and enjoy this excellent star gazing opportunity!
