SUMMARY:Partial Solar Eclipse
DESCRIPTION:Annular Solar Eclipse for much of North America including Delaware. \nThis starts before sunrise – abut 10 degrees so the sun will arise partially eclipsed. You will need eye protection for entire event. \nTimes are for local time from approximate sunrise to the end. Maximum eclipse is at 5:38AM local time in the East-northeast. It is all over at 6:28AM. \nThis speedy eclipse will only last an hour and you’ll need a very low horizon. \nWe are really fortunate to for this event with an average cloud cover of only 65%!

SUMMARY:Dr. Runyon's presentation on Ultima Thule and NASA's future plans for the Kuiper Belt exploration.
DESCRIPTION:At Delmarva Stargazers’ monthly meeting on June 2\, 2019\, Dr. Kirby Runyon of the Johns Hopkins’ Applied Physics Laboratory will be discussing Ultima Thule (NASA’s New Horizons mission to Pluto’s next target) and future plans for the Kuiper Belt exploration. \nAbout the SpeakerContents About the SpeakerWhenWhereTickets\n\nDr. Kirby Runyon is a postdoctoral planetary geologist at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel\, MD. He specializes in geologic interpretation of images and other data of planetary surfaces in addition to conducting laboratory experiments on impact cratering-related processes. \nHe is a science team member on multiple NASA robotic planetary missions\, including Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter\, Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter\, Mars2020 Rover\, and New Horizons. His humble brag is that he was the first to discover mountains on Pluto in the first images returned from Pluto by New Horizons. He worked New Year’s Day analyzing the first images sent back from New Horizons of the mysterious\, icy Kuiper Belt Object Ultima Thule. He will be speaking about the current exploration of the Kuiper Belt and future formulative plans to continue its exploration and will speak on New Horizons’ flyby of Ultima as well as plans to have a future interstellar probe flyby of the small planet Quaoar on its way out of the solar system. \nHe stated that — “Landscapes across the solar system are as aesthetically beautiful as they are scientifically rich. Images from the surfaces of planets beyond Earth are currently limited to the Moon\, Mars\, Titan\, and Venus\, and Comet 67P. Many are familiar with rover images from Mars’ surface\, so we will focus on landscapes—both their beauty and science—of the Moon\, Venus\, and Titan\, with speculation on views from the surface of Europa. Orbital and flyby images of places we have not yet landed on will whet the appetite for a return to these planets\, such as Pluto\, Triton\, and Io.” \nMore on Dr. Kirby Runyon \nWhen\nJune 2\, 2019 5 PM to 7 :30 PM \nWhere\nThe Stargazers are holding this meeting at Smyrna Presbyterian Church located at 118 W Commerce St). We are his meeting at the Church and this will take place of our June 4th meeting and have scheduled a chicken dinner w for $10 per person or $15 per family. Contact Lyle (302-382-3764) if you have questions. The meeting will start at 5 pm for dinner and end around 7:15 pm. Everyone is welcome and the Stargazers hope to see astronomers and teachers from throughout Delmarva. \nTickets\nTo purchase a ticket online please use the PayPal button below. You do not have to have a PayPal account to purchase a ticket.\nYour PayPal statement will show that the payment goes to\nAxlSoftware.com at the site www.axlradius.com. SUMMARY:Buying a telescope!
DESCRIPTION:So you’ve decided to take the plunge and get a telescope. Choosing a telescope is very different from buying a television\, and salespeople rarely understand what amateur astronomers need. Delmarva Stargazers’ has a version of Sky & Telescope’s buying guide below. \nhttps://www.skyandtelescope.com/astronomy-equipment/telescope-buying-guide/ \nIf you want more information\, go to Sky & Telescope’s Skywatching Video Series: Buying Your First Telescope. \nIf you have any questions\, email Don Surles (a Delmarva Stargazer) at buyingtelescope@delmarvastargazers.org or call at 302-653-9445. The Delmarva Stargazers are offering a free training session. Stargazers will check your new telescope’s optical alignment\, show you how to do that and set up the finder-scope. This session will allow you to enjoy your new telescope. There will also be some information to take home about amateur astronomy! \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:May 1st Stargazers Meeting At Loblolly Acres
DESCRIPTION:The Stargazers are holding this meeting at Loblolly Acres located at 3893 Turkey Point Road which lies between Viola south of Woodside\, Delaware (39.0555070\, -75.5704740). We are holding meeting at Loblolly Acres because it is closer to some of our southern amateur astronomers and not too far south for our northern astronomers to attend. \nThe meeting will start at 6 pm for dinner and end around 9 pm. \nDr. His humble brag is that he was the first to discover mountains on Pluto in the first images returned from Pluto by New Horizons. He will be working New Year’s Day to analyze the first images sent back from New Horizons of the mysterious\, icy Kuiper Belt Object Ultima Thule. His cat\, Nixie\, is named after one of Pluto’s small moons\, Nix.” \n\nHe stated that — “Landscapes across the solar system are as aesthetically beautiful as they are scientifically rich. Orbital and flyby images of places we have not yet landed on will whet the appetite for a return to these planets\, such as Pluto\, Triton\, and Io.”\nAfter Dr. Runyon’s presentation\, there will be a discussion on coordinating Delmarva’s amateur astronomical activities and presentations for amateur astronomers throughout the Delmarva Peninsula via Skype or some other group communication app… Some of Wallops Island‘s NASA staff have indicated joining in activities and at times assisting with presentations. By coordinating our activities and some of our monthly meeting presentations we may be able to improve the quality of our meetings and entice some more amateurs to our various club or groups.\n \n
