You will need eye protection for entire event. \nTimes are for local time from approximate sunrise to the end. Maximum eclipse is at 5:38AM local time in the East-northeast. It is all over at 6:28AM. \nThis speedy eclipse will only last an hour and you’ll need a very low horizon. \nWe are really fortunate to for this event with an average cloud cover of only 65%! There has been no word from our contact from at Pickering Creek about cancellation. It would be a poor night for Geminids. \nThe Geminid meteor shower is usually the best meteor shower of the year and except for the inconvenience of a nearly full Moon (96%) we should not expect 120 meteors per hour at its peak which occurs on December 13. \nThe Geminids are associated with the radiant found in the constellation Gemini generated by the asteroid 3200 Phaethon.  Unlike many showers this starts in the evening and  peaks in the early morning so we may see a few other objects while the evening is young. \nAn observing session is planned for December 13\, 2019 between 8 pm to 10 pm at the Pickering Creek Audubon Center in Easton MD for a moony night public program. \nOur host will be Harrison Jackson\, the Education & Outreach Associate\, with the Pickering Creek Audubon Center. \nThis will be a public viewing event where people have been invited to bring telescopes so there may be some collimation issues with the Newtonian telescopes. We will have a few well collimated telescopes of our own. \nThe Moon will be 96% full at 9PM so there will be few stars available. We should be able to see the Great Orion Nebula\, M45\, M42 at least. A tiny Mars with  a diameter of 8.4′ and an elusive Neptune will be up in Aquarius. The Auriga open clusters M38\, M36\, and M37 may also be located. \nDirections are found on the Pickering Creek Website. At these speeds it is in a hyperbolic orbit \nThe comet will make its closest approach to the sun on December 7\,and will come closest to Earth\, within 180 million miles\, on December 29. It has a velocity of 93\,000 mph (150\,000 kph) which exceeds any comet speed originating from the Oort cloud or anywhere in our Sun’s vicinity and will exit the solar system.\n \nIt is expected to get to peak brightness in mid December and remain observable in a moderate sized scope at magnitude 14.7 until April 2020. (We’ll see about that) \nIt will be at its best from Dec 1st through the 10th (perihelion) before the full Moon on Dec 12. It will be an early morning event. \nFor Comet Borisov  ephemeris visit the Minor Planet Center \nYou can follow it on Sky & Telescope‘s web site. If you love the speed of a lunar eclipse you’ll be  thrilled by this 5 and a half hours transit. \nIn Delaware this transit will already have started and will be mostly observable (weather permitting – prediction is for 40%  cloudy). The good news is that it is cloudy 61% of the time on this day. \nA group of Stargazers and anyone else interested will meet at Woodland Beach  around 6:30AM  although since the even will last until around 1PM  you could arrive later. Telescopes with good solar filters are welcome. \n“Drive on Rt 6 out of Smyrna\, DE until you can’t drive any more.” The beaches are private so don’t walk or set up on them without the house owner’s permission. \nThe current (as of April 25th) table gives transit information for Philadelphia rather than Dover. \nAll times are local. Congratulations! But what comes next? Not an impulsive shopping trip to the nearest mall! Choosing a telescope is very different from buying a television\, and department-store salespeople rarely understand what amateur astronomer needs. This telescope buying guide is meant to help make sure your first scope is the best type of telescope for you. \nThe Delmarva Stargazers has permission to use parts of Sky & Telescope’s article “Ultimate Telescope Buying Guide” by Joshua Roth on our website (delmarvastargazers.org). The entire article is available on Sky & Telescope’s website \n(https://www.skyandtelescope.com/astronomy-equipment/telescope-buying-guide/)). \nWant to know more than what you find there? Hear advice straight from the experts in Sky & Telescope’s Skywatching Video Series: Buying Your First Telescope. \nUnfortunately\, most new telescopes are never used because they were never set- up properly and the new owners just don’t know how to do it! On Nov. 2\, 2019 from 10 am to 1 pm\, the Delmarva Stargazers plan to have a hands-on instructional session at the Smyrna Presbyterian Church (118 W. Commerce St\, Smyrna\,19977). There is no cost to attend. Hopefully\, this session will allow you to purchase your first scope with confidence that you will be able to use your new scope.\nIf you have any concerns or questions please attend our Saturday (Nov.2\, 2019) event\, email Lyle Jones (a Delmarva Stargazer) at buyingtelescope@delmarvastargazers.org or call at 302-382-3764. Attendance is expected  to be about 50 people – several telescopes maybe required. \nNew Information: \nOur Becoming an Outdoors-Woman event will be held at Lums Pond State Park at Area 4. I’ve attached a map of the park. Once you enter the park you’ll pass the fee booth (there most likely won’t be anyone there but if there is just tell them you’re with the BOW program)\, then you’ll pass the nature center on your left. After you pass the nature center the entrance to Area 4 will be on your right almost immediately. We’ll have a BOW sign to help direct folks into the Area 4 parking lot. \nAs part of this event\, we try to offer as many diverse educational opportunities as possible and are currently interested in providing a stargazing program for our overnight participants on Friday\, September 20th. Our evening program time slot is 8pm – 10pm (programs are usually 1 to 2 hours in length)\, and the area in which we’ll be staying has no electricity so we believe it will be an optimal location for viewing the night sky without nearby ambient light. \nI’m emailing you to see if there might be anyone from your group who may be interested in providing a 1 to 2 hour stargazing program for us on Friday\, September 20th. As a thank you for your support\, Delmarva Stargazers would be added to our list of sponsors for the event (identified in signage and hand-outs) and we’d be happy to include any literature you’d like to pass out as part of our goodie bags for each participant. Also\, if the instructor would like to arrive a little early\, they would be most welcome to join us for dinner at 6pm. DESCRIPTION:At Delmarva Stargazers’ monthly meeting on June 2\, 2019\, Dr. Kirby Runyon of the Johns Hopkins’ Applied Physics Laboratory will be discussing Ultima Thule (NASA’s New Horizons mission to Pluto’s next target) and future plans for the Kuiper Belt exploration. \nAbout the Speaker\nDr. Kirby Runyon is a postdoctoral planetary geologist at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel\, MD. He specializes in geologic interpretation of images and other data of planetary surfaces in addition to conducting laboratory experiments on impact cratering-related processes. \nHe is a science team member on multiple NASA robotic planetary missions\, including Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter\, Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter\, Mars2020 Rover\, and New Horizons. His humble brag is that he was the first to discover mountains on Pluto in the first images returned from Pluto by New Horizons. He worked New Year’s Day analyzing the first images sent back from New Horizons of the mysterious\, icy Kuiper Belt Object Ultima Thule. He will be speaking about the current exploration of the Kuiper Belt and future formulative plans to continue its exploration and will speak on New Horizons’ flyby of Ultima as well as plans to have a future interstellar probe flyby of the small planet Quaoar on its way out of the solar system. \nHe stated that — “Landscapes across the solar system are as aesthetically beautiful as they are scientifically rich. Images from the surfaces of planets beyond Earth are currently limited to the Moon\, Mars\, Titan\, and Venus\, and Comet 67P. Many are familiar with rover images from Mars’ surface\, so we will focus on landscapes—both their beauty and science—of the Moon\, Venus\, and Titan\, with speculation on views from the surface of Europa. Orbital and flyby images of places we have not yet landed on will whet the appetite for a return to these planets\, such as Pluto\, Triton\, and Io.” \nMore on  Dr. Kirby Runyon \nWhen\nJune 2\, 2019  5 PM to 7 :30 PM \nWhere\nThe Stargazers are holding this meeting at Smyrna Presbyterian Church located at 118 W Commerce St). We are his meeting at the Church and this will take place of our June 4th meeting and have scheduled a chicken dinner w for $10 per person or $15 per family. Contact Lyle (302-382-3764) if you have questions. The meeting will start at 5 pm for dinner and end around 7:15 pm. Other\, more famous showers\, will be battling the nearly Full Moon for visibility. This shower will have no moon at all since we have  just had a New Moon. \nYou should expect perhaps 10–20 per hour because of the low angle of the radiant (15°–25°) in the morning before sunrise on May 5th. More likely half that number (editor’s opinion). \nThese originate from Halley’s Comet which leaves a debris field of dust from it ‘s out gassing each time it nears the sun. Delmarva Stargazers’ has a version of Sky & Telescope’s buying guide  below. \nhttps://www.skyandtelescope.com/astronomy-equipment/telescope-buying-guide/ \nIf you want more information\, go to Sky & Telescope’s Skywatching Video Series: Buying Your First Telescope. \nIf you have any questions\, email Don Surles (a Delmarva Stargazer) at buyingtelescope@delmarvastargazers.org or call at 302-653-9445. The Delmarva Stargazers are offering a free training session. Stargazers will check your new telescope’s optical alignment\, show you how to do that and set up the finder-scope. We are holding meeting at Loblolly Acres because it is closer to some of our southern amateur astronomers and not too far south for our northern astronomers to attend. \nThe meeting will start at 6 pm for dinner and end around 9 pm. \nDr. He is a science team member on multiple NASA robotic planetary missions\, including Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter\, Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter\, Mars2020 Rover\, and New Horizons. His humble brag is that he was the first to discover mountains on Pluto in the first images returned from Pluto by New Horizons. He will be working New Year’s Day to analyze the first images sent back from New Horizons of the mysterious\, icy Kuiper Belt Object Ultima Thule. His cat\, Nixie\, is named after one of Pluto’s small moons\, Nix.” \n\nHe stated that — “Landscapes across the solar system are as aesthetically beautiful as they are scientifically rich. Orbital and flyby images of places we have not yet landed on will whet the appetite for a return to these planets\, such as Pluto\, Triton\, and Io.”\nAfter Dr. Runyon’s presentation\, there will be a discussion on coordinating Delmarva’s amateur astronomical activities and presentations for amateur astronomers throughout the Delmarva Peninsula via Skype or some other group communication app… Some of Wallops Island‘s NASA staff have indicated joining in activities and at times assisting with presentations. By coordinating our activities and some of our monthly meeting presentations we may be able to improve the quality of our meetings and entice some more amateurs to our various club or groups.\n \n  URL:https://delmarvastargazers.org/event/may-1st-stargazers-meeting-at-loblolly-acres/ LOCATION:Loblolly Acres\, 3893 Turkey Point Road\, Woodside\, DE\, 19980\, United States CATEGORIES:Stargazers Event END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20171209T170000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20171209T200000 DTSTAMP:20260205T182927 CREATED:20170915T190919Z LAST-MODIFIED:20170915T191248Z UID:503-1512838800-1512849600@delmarvastargazers.org SUMMARY:Candlelit Caroling DESCRIPTION:Ring in the holiday season with an evening of lights\, music\, and cheer. Enjoy live music\, hors d’oeuvres\, and a cash wine bar in the gallery\, caroling and fireside hot cider along the candlelit Blockston Branch\, and exploring the mysteries of the winter sky with Delmarva Stargazers.
