SUMMARY:Dover Library - STEM Makerfest
DESCRIPTION:My name is Jaclyn and I am a librarian at the Dover Public Library. \nOn Saturday\, June 15th\, 2019 the Library will be hosting its annual STEM Makerfest from 10am to 2pm. \nThe goal of the Makerfest is to bring innovative programming related to science\, technology\, engineering\, and math to the community and to get them excited about the creative opportunities available in these fields of study. \nParticipants are invited to bring technology\, experiments\, and other interactive materials to showcase their designs\, inventions\, and examples of work. This is an opportunity for STEM Makers to showoff what they do! Each participant will be given a 10’ x 10’ space\, tables\, and chairs. Most booths will have access to electricity. The event is open to all ages and will coincide with the kickoff of the Library’s Summer Reading Program. \nThe Library will not have designated quiet areas this day\, so participants should feel free to bring resources that make noise. Programs should be fun\, educational\, and engaging; the more interactive it is\, the better! \nThis year’s Summer Reading Program theme is space\, so I thought the Delmarva Stargazers might be interested in participating. \nPDF Application for Makerfest

SUMMARY:Dr. Runyon's presentation on Ultima Thule and NASA's future plans for the Kuiper Belt exploration.
DESCRIPTION:At Delmarva Stargazers’ monthly meeting on June 2\, 2019\, Dr. Kirby Runyon of the Johns Hopkins’ Applied Physics Laboratory will be discussing Ultima Thule (NASA’s New Horizons mission to Pluto’s next target) and future plans for the Kuiper Belt exploration. \nAbout the Speaker\nDr. Kirby Runyon is a postdoctoral planetary geologist at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel\, MD. He specializes in geologic interpretation of images and other data of planetary surfaces in addition to conducting laboratory experiments on impact cratering-related processes. \nHe is a science team member on multiple NASA robotic planetary missions\, including Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter\, Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter\, Mars2020 Rover\, and New Horizons. His humble brag is that he was the first to discover mountains on Pluto in the first images returned from Pluto by New Horizons. He worked New Year’s Day analyzing the first images sent back from New Horizons of the mysterious\, icy Kuiper Belt Object Ultima Thule. He will be speaking about the current exploration of the Kuiper Belt and future formulative plans to continue its exploration and will speak on New Horizons’ flyby of Ultima as well as plans to have a future interstellar probe flyby of the small planet Quaoar on its way out of the solar system. \nHe stated that — “Landscapes across the solar system are as aesthetically beautiful as they are scientifically rich. Images from the surfaces of planets beyond Earth are currently limited to the Moon\, Mars\, Titan\, and Venus\, and Comet 67P. Many are familiar with rover images from Mars’ surface\, so we will focus on landscapes—both their beauty and science—of the Moon\, Venus\, and Titan\, with speculation on views from the surface of Europa. Orbital and flyby images of places we have not yet landed on will whet the appetite for a return to these planets\, such as Pluto\, Triton\, and Io.” \nMore on Dr. Kirby Runyon \nWhen\nJune 2\, 2019 5 PM to 7 :30 PM \nWhere\nThe Stargazers are holding this meeting at Smyrna Presbyterian Church located at 118 W Commerce St). We are his meeting at the Church and this will take place of our June 4th meeting and have scheduled a chicken dinner w for $10 per person or $15 per family. Contact Lyle (302-382-3764) if you have questions. The meeting will start at 5 pm for dinner and end around 7:15 pm. Everyone is welcome and the Stargazers hope to see astronomers and teachers from throughout Delmarva. \nTickets\nTo purchase a ticket online please use the PayPal button below. You do not have to have a PayPal account to purchase a ticket.\nYour PayPal statement will show that the payment goes to\nAxlSoftware.com at the site www.axlradius.com. SUMMARY:Eta Aquariid Meteor Shower
DESCRIPTION:This is expected to be the only meteor shower that will have a good display this year. Other\, more famous showers\, will be battling the nearly Full Moon for visibility. This shower will have no moon at all since we have just had a New Moon. \nYou should expect perhaps 10–20 per hour because of the low angle of the radiant (15°–25°) in the morning before sunrise on May 5th. More likely half that number (editor’s opinion). \nThese originate from Halley’s Comet which leaves a debris field of dust from it ‘s out gassing each time it nears the sun. In fact the Earth crosses this field twice each year the first time called the Eta Aquariid and the second in October when the shower is called the Orionids. \nThere is an article on this shower at Sky & Telescope.

SUMMARY:Buying a telescope!
DESCRIPTION:So you’ve decided to take the plunge and get a telescope. Choosing a telescope is very different from buying a television\, and salespeople rarely understand what amateur astronomers need. Delmarva Stargazers’ has a version of Sky & Telescope’s buying guide below. \nhttps://www.skyandtelescope.com/astronomy-equipment/telescope-buying-guide/ \nIf you want more information\, go to Sky & Telescope’s Skywatching Video Series: Buying Your First Telescope. \nIf you have any questions\, email Don Surles (a Delmarva Stargazer) at buyingtelescope@delmarvastargazers.org or call at 302-653-9445. The Delmarva Stargazers are offering a free training session. Stargazers will check your new telescope’s optical alignment\, show you how to do that and set up the finder-scope. This session will allow you to enjoy your new telescope. There will also be some information to take home about amateur astronomy! \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Annie Jump Cannon Birthday Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Starting on Dec 6th in Salisbury\, Md\, and ending on December 9th in Dover with a stop in far northern Hockessin there is a celebration of the Birthday of Annie Cannon. This event has been very poorly promoted but don’t let that stop you from attending at least one of the events. \nWesley College seems to have a bit of handle on events at their site. There is a link to buy tickets and sundries on the page but that link is erroneous and takes you to a pathetic test blog entry. Instead go here where the four day event unfolds. \nThe event features Dava Sobel\, author of The Glass Universe\, performing various roles – talk\, panel\, TV interview and so on with book signings along the way. \nThe book is worth buying for the story of Annie Cannon alone although it covers creation of the Harvard Plate Collection and the Henry Draper Catalog of astronomical spectra. Both are still in use today.

SUMMARY:Pittsville Library
DESCRIPTION:This is an astronomy night for the Pittsville Library in Maryland Pittsville is located off route 50 a few miles east of Salisbury\, Md. The library is part of the Wicomico library system. \nThe Delmarva Stargazers have visited the library many times over the years. It is unusual that a Library would hold any astronomy event when the normal ours are 10:00am – 6:00pm and it isn’t truly dark until 9:30PM but this library is different. \nThis will be very close to a new moon and in a rural residential location. We will meed behind the library away from the school lights this time. \nWeather permitting (up to 20% cloud cover) we could use a couple of people and telescopes. If you just want to come out you’re welcome too.

SUMMARY:May 1st Stargazers Meeting At Loblolly Acres
DESCRIPTION:The Stargazers are holding this meeting at Loblolly Acres located at 3893 Turkey Point Road which lies between Viola south of Woodside\, Delaware (39.0555070\, -75.5704740). We are holding meeting at Loblolly Acres because it is closer to some of our southern amateur astronomers and not too far south for our northern astronomers to attend. \nThe meeting will start at 6 pm for dinner and end around 9 pm. \nDr. He is a science team member on multiple NASA robotic planetary missions\, including Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter\, Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter\, Mars2020 Rover\, and New Horizons. His humble brag is that he was the first to discover mountains on Pluto in the first images returned from Pluto by New Horizons. He will be working New Year’s Day to analyze the first images sent back from New Horizons of the mysterious\, icy Kuiper Belt Object Ultima Thule. His cat\, Nixie\, is named after one of Pluto’s small moons\, Nix.” \n\nHe stated that — “Landscapes across the solar system are as aesthetically beautiful as they are scientifically rich. Orbital and flyby images of places we have not yet landed on will whet the appetite for a return to these planets\, such as Pluto\, Triton\, and Io.”\nAfter Dr. Runyon’s presentation\, there will be a discussion on coordinating Delmarva’s amateur astronomical activities and presentations for amateur astronomers throughout the Delmarva Peninsula via Skype or some other group communication app… Some of Wallops Island‘s NASA staff have indicated joining in activities and at times assisting with presentations. By coordinating our activities and some of our monthly meeting presentations we may be able to improve the quality of our meetings and entice some more amateurs to our various club or groups.\n \n

SUMMARY:Photograph the Antares Launch against the Sun
DESCRIPTION:There is a unique opportunity for this launch due to its early morning timeline. within certain locations along the Eastern Shore the vehicle will appear to transit in front of the sun – potentially making for great photo opportunities. \nSome of your members probably have the right equipment (solar scope\, telescope with filters\, etc) to be able to capture this photograph. \nI wanted to pass this information along to see if anyone might be interested in trying for this once-in-a-(decade?) event. Unfortunately we cannot offer compensation\, but we will publish\, with appropriate credit\, any pictures obtained. \nCarlos G. Niederstrasser\nMaster Systems Engineer\nBusiness Development & Special Initiatives\nOrbital ATK\, Inc.\n \nThis is certainly a great opportunity for any Stargazer to try their hand a getting some very special photographs of an Antares launch! \nHere is an URL that visually describes the areas the shots can be taken from: \nGoogle map of the areas to line up with the Sun & Rocket \nThe town of Saxis\, VA is suggested a good place for the shoot. \nIf you are handy with Google Maps here is the map data as the KMZ file. \nYou will need the usual solar gear: solar scope or regular telescope with filters and a camera. This should not require too much set up time since the trajectory does not require polar alignment and the exposures should be short! \nThis is the flight announcement. Naturally you should be checking the flight feed to see when it lifts off\, if at all. \n

SUMMARY:Mel Bartels Dinner and Talk
DESCRIPTION:Mr. Mel Bartels will be a guest mirror maker at Don Surles Mirror Making Workshop #17 (March 17th thru 19th\, 2017) sponsored by the Delmarva Stargazers which will be held at Redden State Forrest Lodge in Sussex County. Mel Bartels is a great contributor to the amateur telescope making community. \nOn March 15th from 7 to 9 PM the Delmarva Stargazers will be hosting Mr. Bartels at the Smyrna Presbyterian Church where he will speak about his Integrated Flux Nebula (IFN) discoveries and catalog.  At 7 PM we will have dinner available from Where Pigs Fly (pulled pork\, pulled chicken\, a vegetarian entrée\, broccoli salad\, potato salad\, skillet baked beans\, coleslaw and cookies or brownies for dessert).  After dinner Mr. Bartels will do his presentation on IFN. The event will cost $15 for Stargazer members and $20 for non-members. If you just wanted to hear his presentation at 8 pm the cost will be $5 for members and $10 for non-members. Contact Lyle Jones ‘worm1647 AT comcast Dot net’ for a reservation for the event or for more information.  Reservations must be made by March 10Th! \nMr. Bartels has developed an open sourced telescope control system that became popular worldwide. He speaks at astronomical conferences; his telescope walkabouts are a popular highlight at the Oregon Star Party. The International Astronomical Union named asteroid 17823 Bartels in recognition for his contributions to amateur astronomy. \nHe has developed an IFN catalog which presently has over 48 entries. IFN is defined in the Mandel-Wilson Catalog of Unexplored Nebulae as high galactic latitude nebulae that are illuminated not by a single star (as most nebula in the plane of the Galaxy are) but by the energy from the integrated flux of all the stars in the Milky Way. These nebula clouds\, an important component of the Interstellar Medium\, are composed of dust particles\, hydrogen and carbon monoxide and other elements.  The dust is scattering blue light a broad red fluorescing spectrum of light known as the Extended Red Emission (ERE) that adds an additional broad-band emission to the red part of the spectrum. Therefore\, on color images there are both blue and red components creating beautiful and interesting images.
