Eta Aquariid Meteor Shower

May 5, 2019 @ 03:00 - 04:30

This is expected to be the only meteor shower that will have a good display this year. Other, more famous showers, will be battling the nearly Full Moon for visibility. This shower will have no moon at all since we have  just had a New Moon.

You should expect perhaps 10–20 per hour because of the low angle of the radiant (15°–25°) in the morning before sunrise on May 5th. More likely half that number (editor’s opinion).

These originate from Halley’s Comet which leaves a debris field of dust from it ‘s out gassing each time it nears the sun. In fact the Earth crosses this field twice each year the first time called the Eta Aquariid and the second in October when the shower is called the Orionids.

There is an article on this shower at Sky & Telescope.
