This is essentially valid but there is no club backing you with insurance nor resources.

It’s easy to participate in an outreach. You don’t even have to own a telescope if you share the outreach with someone with a scope. You are already starting out miles ahead of someone who has never seen through a telescope so share this with people. We have lots of scopes you can use (no long the case).
Some general knowledge of the sky helps even just knowing a few constellations. For some light polluted places we can’t see any constellations 🙂 At outreaches even we learn as we go.
